Nookie: across the seasons

Transeasonal is a word I look upon with some degree of veneration. It may be a little nebulous, a little like creating more collections where perhaps they're not wholly necessary - but in Australia (and specifically Melbourne) where weather can vary so dramatically between one hour of the day and the next, anything that can be labelled as transeasonal has a distinct advantage. The ability to layer, to put together an outfit that's suited to in-between weather, an outfit that can chop and change accordingly.

For Australian label Nookie that means creating pieces that may lean towards being winter pieces, bar for their light-weight fabrics and particular layerability. A great example of this is autumn 2011's 'Aspen Cape', a light cape that would be just as easily thrown over a spring dress at night as over an autumn outfit by day. In other parts of the collection are subtle tribal prints and the kind of sheer lace pieces that are similarly suited to varying degrees of temperature.

Lisa Maree: strength without revolution

With the front row seats removed and vines hanging from ceiling the scene was set for the debut of Lisa Maree's 2011 swimwear and lifestyle 'Under My Skin' collection. Inspired by 'primal urges' and interpreted through oversized snake prints, the strength of Lisa Maree's collection actually lay elsewhere in pieces that married spring's crochet clothing trend with 2011's swimwear trends thus setting the collection apart with a strong take on crochet bikinis.

Hair how-to: the bird's nest bun

Back when it appeared on the Lanvin spring 2010 runway, we termed it a birds-nest topknot that's Hitchcock heroine meets modern-day bedhair; and, as 2011's hair trends continue to evolve it's the type of topknot that's come out on top (pardon the pun). Why? It can still be a little wispy, a little messy; but it's elegant. Thus, it's a runway hair trend that we've already seen translated to the red carpet.

Chanel carried the look over to pre-fall 2011, ornamented by embellished headbands.

Statement strapping

The term string bikini has particular connotations, connotations that carry with them a particular level of sexiness. And 'sexy' is an oft desired quality of any bikini. While string bikinis aren't out of fashion in 2011 / 2012, neither are they on-trend. You can still borrow from them, however, should you wish to choose a bikini for the season that features the very on-trend 'statement strap'.

We call this particular bikini trend strapping and not stringing because it's been created in both string thin and wider cuts.

A black bikini with strapping on both its shoulders and its briefs. We personally wouldn't style it this way and would stick to straps up top or down bottom: both feels like visual overkill and diminishes the impact

Ruffled bikini / ruffled swimsuit

Perhaps it's the inspiration of vintage swimwear on 2011 and 2012, or it's just the need for women to find a distinct, feminine way for their swimsuits standout by the pool and at the beach, either way: ruffled bikinis and ruffled swimsuits are one of the swimwear trends for the coming season.

And the fact that ruffled swimwear is an on-trend style at the moment is just about where the rules for the trend end. Unlike vintage swimwear or even one-shouldered bikinis, ruffled swimwear has no distinct style 'rules'. Instead we've seen it styled and cut in a lot of different ways for spring / summer 2011 and 2012, often working alongside other one piece and bikini trends for the year.
Ruffles as the secondary feature on a crochet monokini where the crochet dominates.

Bikini 2011 / swimwear 2011 / 2012 trends

With spring / summer burgeoning for many a fashioniser, we're all eager to hit the beach. But whether you're soaking up the sun in Majorca or on the Venice Lido, the most important decision won't be the SPF of your sun tan lotion, but which swimwear pieces you'll be wearing.

This year Fashionising.com is taking a look at the 'in' styles and the 'out' styles of swimwear, helping you choose the piece of swimwear that is perfectly inline with 2011's fashion trends. Read on to find out what cuts and styles are in fashion this year, and don't forget: if you'd like to keep up to date with all the latest fashion trends and how to style then, then subscribe to Fashionising.com's newsletter or RSS feed.

Crop tops in 2011

Fighting fit with stomach fully bared: Rag & Bone and Ohne Titel brought us sporty examples that are perfectly sexy for those with the confidence to pull them off. These type of cropped tops end just below the bust, and were paired with hipster pants for a revealing end result. You could just as easily substitute the hip-huggers for a high waisted bottom half, though, if you wanted to add some modesty
Beneath a sheer layer: adding a layer of transparent fabric is the perfect way to combine the ongoing popularity of the sheer trend with the newness of the exposed midriff.

Crop tops: SS11 fashion trend

While we've been seeing crop tops and bared stomachs on the runway for a good couple of years now, the reality is that it's a trend with little hope of reaching a point of mass consumption any time soon. Why? Simply because we live in a body conscious age where it's only the minority of people daring enough to expose that much skin. That said, spring 2011 will push the trend forwards and further into the mainstream (if not the masses).

As a 2011 fashion trend the crop top is not just about exposing one's whole stomach, but about finding elegant new ways of showing a peep of toned midriff. Yes there's the crop top of the grunge-revival. Yes there's the crop top of the sportswear-as-daywear trend. But there's also the crop top as a sophisticated, refined piece that some will embrace as a look not to be feared. Read on for these examples and more.

Key look: loungerie

For the latter, they've coined a new term: loungerie. With the elements of lingerie, be it girly or overtly sexual, so prominent in street fashion, Interfiliere see Spring 2011's key street wear trends as a mixture between lingerie, swimwear and streetwear (which they group as loungewear), and lingerie. Hence the portmanteau.

In their own words:

The new Loungerie takes a leaf out of, and gets the best of, lingerie for an alternative, parallel wardrobe; [one that is] light, intimate, and impossible to "classify."

Britney Spears does not think about the calories in the food

“When it’s time to pull and tuck, I’m sure I will consider it (surgery),”

The singer, who is sporting an incredible figure these days, has a sweet tooth and had put on 14 kg in just one month in 2009. But then the 29-year-old Britney Spears consequently put herself on a 1,600 calorie-a-day diet to lose weight, reports contactmusic.com.

“Britney Spears does not think about the calories in the food, just that Britney Spears likes it. Britney Spears loves greasy food and creamy sweets and hates fruit and vegetables,”

But the singer doesn’t want to take the diet route again as Britney Spears considers it a gateway to hell, and would rather prefer to go under the knife to get back in shape

The Pratt Pack

May 18, 2011

There were plenty of hugs and kisses exchanged between Jane Pratt and her guests last night as they arrived at the Jane Hotel to celebrate the launch of her latest media venture, xoJane.com. On her move from magazines to digital, she said, “It’s so raw—I love that you make mistakes and people see them. I have always wanted people to be able to see that process.”

If you wanted to see her process, you needed only to head to dinner at Café Gitane last night. Pratt, her staff, and a few of her famous friends were on hand—and those famous friends are also, she revealed, soon to be staffers of sorts. “Courtney [Love] and I are talking about having her write a regular column for us,” Pratt told Style.com. “She brings a whole new perspective to whatever she does.” Pratt got plenty of Love when her 1992 Sassy cover girl arrived at the after-party. They greeted one another with multiple hugs and girlish squeals of excitement—in other words, like the oldest of friends, which, Love pointed out, is what they are. “We both don’t remember how we met, actually,” she said, glancing at Pratt. “I believe it was through Michael Stipe,” the editor added.

They continued toward the fireplace to join Stipe, where the three of them held court for most of the evening. It was an evening of Courtney’s usual high jinks: She tried on Stipe’s glasses, removed her shoes, and took iPhone photos of herself and others until she eventually got distracted by her cigarette in hand. To those nearby, she went into a lecture on how to properly smoke in public as she crossed her legs, adjusted the train of her flesh-toned silk dress, and tossed her head back to blow smoke into the air. Unfiltered talk, you might say. It should fit right in with Pratt’s trademark grabby style on xoJane.com.

Styled To A T

May 18, 2011

Fashion’s myriad collaborations tend to make for unusual bedfellows, but “Fruit of the Loom” and “Leslie Fremar”—the stylist who makes sure Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron, and Jennifer Connelly look good—aren’t necessarily names you’d imagine in the same sentence. As it turns out, they’d had this date from the beginning.

“When we drive to our country house, I’ll stop at Target or Walmart, and I’ll buy those three-packs of men’s undershirts,” Fremar said by phone today, on a brief stop back in New York between Europe (where she’s just wrapped Witherspoon’s Water for Elephants premiere tour), L.A. (where she’s set to shoot a campaign with Annie Leibovitz), and Russia (the next stop on her itinerary). “I wear them all the time. The quality’s great for the price, but it’s not as soft as, say, another T-shirt I would buy. Then I would also spend a lot of money on designer T-shirts.”

Where Do You Stand On Two-Tone Pants?

Just when we’d gotten used to brightly colored pants (see the Spring collections of Jil Sander, Marc Jacobs, Fendi, and, don’t forget, Zara), New York designers like Derek Lam and Phillip Lim went and upped the ante for Fall, parading trousers in not one but two tones down the runways. At first, we were, ahem, divided, but they’re really growing on us now. Why? Well, let Prabal Gurung make the case. According to the designer, who showed a silver and black pair for Fall (left) and similarly flattering ones in seasons past, “Two-tone pants, particularly those with a curved seam, really elongate and make the leg appear slimmer.” The trend continued apace across the pond at Chloé and Celine. We even spied model Jessica Stam working the look for a day of go-sees in Milan, and we’ve got to agree with Gurung—her legs really do look a mile long.

Man’s Best Friend? Woman’s Best Shopping Adviser

“All we’re missing is the opium,” said Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo. Everything but was on the menu when BG transformed its seventh-floor restaurant into a casbah for a lunch and mini fashion show of Chanel’s Paris-Byzance Pre-Fall collection yesterday afternoon. It might’ve been the first time ever that Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon has played in the tony eatery. The occasion: a celebration of the retailer’s new Chanel shop-in-shop on the second floor, where a trunk show of said collection happens to be taking place. Once the models slipped out of their frocks, they were whisked downstairs for customers to ogle up close. The Peter Marino-designed space is 50 percent bigger than the department store’s previous Chanel shop, and the back-of-house, client services space is 100 percent bigger. “Bergdorf Goodman and Chanel’s relationship goes back to the eighties, I believe, and we finally have a shop that’s on par with the quality of the product,” Fargo added. She had no argument on the subject with one shopper. Chanel ambassador Leigh Lezark overheard one well-dressed lady ask her dog what it thought of a tweedy jacket. “What do you think,” she said to the pooch, “do you like the gray?” Far-out.
